Are you starting your new job? The one that you know is the right one for you? Just as you’ve got your career on track, it is also important to make a good first impression to both your colleagues and boss by dressing decently but stunningly.
Before buying and wearing the new workplace fashion trends, you have to keep your eyes wide open and examine the environment at your workplace. There are a few things to keep in mind: what is not acceptable and what is, will you look too overdressed or under dressed, and is your outfit suitable for the job. It is important to understand what is appropriate in your industry. If the company has a certain dress code, you should always follow it. Here are some tips on what to wear and what not to wear to work.
What not to wear
While dress codes may vary from company to company, the most important rule at every workplace is to always avoid low cut clothing. Make sure that your chest is covered before heading out to work. Slightly transparent clothing is also inappropriate to wear to work. Before throwing on that sheer blouse that makes your lingerie visible, wear a camisole or thin t-shirt underneath before heading out.
Besides, never ever wear flip flops to your workplace. Though at some offices, sandals are considered acceptable, flip flops are better saved for beach outings on a bright summer day. Also keep in mind that if you are going to wear a skirt, it mustn’t be more than two fingers above the knees.
What to wear
You won’t go wrong with a button-down shirt, knee-length skirt and black tights. If you’re looking for a less formal outfit, you can always swap out the shirt with an elegant blouse. The most essential piece of clothing, for any type of dress code is a blazer in a neutral colour, such as grey, brown, black or navy. With the blazer, dressing for work won’t be so dull and will make you look both stylish and professional. It can be layered above a collared shirt for a more formal look, or a dress for more casual formal days.
You can also stock up on a few pieces of statement necklaces for days when the colours of your outfit are simpler. These necklaces will boost the look of your outfit with its bold and bright colors and exquisite designs. If you have no idea what to wear to your first day of work, overdress! It is so much better to be in a formal outfit on the first day of work, rather than showing up under dressed in jeans. By dressing up well gives people the impression that you take the job seriously but being under dressed shows that you couldn’t care much. There are many ways to dress appropriately to meet the dressing requirements of your company. But always keep in mind that just because you see a popular fashion trend at the meantime, it does not mean that it is the correct one for you and your workplace.
